A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
